The Roanoke Island Fire Department is a true definition of a design/build project, therefore we wanted to share the full story.  PCI was retained to design the new fire department, demolish the four existing structures on the site, perform the sitework, and construct the new fire department.  All of these tasks were accomplished in a 9 month period!  We performed much of the work in house but also relied on the most qualified subcontractors in the area to complete this project.  Enjoy the explanations and pictures below that tell this story.

Phase 1 – PCI Sample Design Plans

Premiere Contracting was retained by the Roanoke Island Fire Department in the early stages to design and coordinate all the professionals in this phase.  PCI worked for months with the builders committee to tailor the layout to meet their needs and economize the building.

Phase 2 – Initial Demolition

The initial demolition was for three of the four existing Roanoke Island Fire Department structures.  A house, masonry utility building which served the existing fire department, and an outbuilding.  PCI performed this work and had all the debris removed in three days.

Phase 3 – Construction

View the pictures during construction.  This project challenged our management and subcontractors during the construction process.  From the excavation of thousands of yards of poor soils, to weather challenges, we took it all in stride, and completed the project on time and within budget!

Phase 4 – Completed Construction

Here is a sample of the pictures of the completed Roanoke Island Fire Department building.  Most were taken before the fire department occupied the building and some were taken after occupancy.  This is a project that makes PCI extremely proud.

Building Summary:

  • Metal Building – 3,900 Sq. Ft. Fire truck bay area
  • Timber Framed – 2,600 Sq. Ft. First Floor area
  • Timber Framed – 2,600 Sq. Ft. Second Floor area
  • Total 9,100 Sq. Ft Building area

Site Work Summary:

  • Concrete parking and driveways
  • Preliminary and final grading of site
  • Stormwater Infrastructure pipework and pond
  • Septic system, and Utilities

Phase 5 – Demolition of old Fire Department

Once the new fire department was constructed and occupied, it became the task of PCI to demolish the existing department.  The first stage was to send in a crew to dismantle the overhang closest to the new fire department which was only a few feet way!  Next PCI’s President jumped in the excavator and finished demolition.
